Membership

And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s: it is holy unto the Lord.
– Leviticus 27:30

All Christians baptized in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church with its rites and cannons, who are at least 18 years of age and who are willing to fulfill their religious obligations to the Church, are invited to become members. Membership is accompanied by payment of membership dues as the member’s acknowledgment that while salvation is a gift freely received through God’s grace, we all owe individually for the facility and the means through which we are joined as a church family.

Baptism (Christening)

Baptism is the sacrament through which a person is born again and accepted into the membership of the Church after being dipped into water three times in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Of all the sacraments it is the first because it is the door through which believers enter the Church and the Kingdom of grace according to what was said by the Lord: “Except a man be born of water and spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5)

Therefore, it must be received by believers before they can receive any other sacrament

Holy Matrimony

The sacrament of matrimony is the holy service through which the groom and the bride are united together and given the divine grace, which sanctifies their marital union, making it perfect and spiritual like the unity of Christ and the Church.

This sacrament is of great importance, in it not only the lives of the two persons, but the home; the Church and the kingdom of God are deeply involved. It is not a sacrament to be regarded lightly or performed thoughtlessly and indiscriminately.

Requiem (Tselote Fithat)

Requiem Service is a venerable tradition in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewhedo Church, where we remember and pray for the souls of our departed loved ones. In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, we believe that with the Resurrection of Christ, the barrier between the living and the dead has vanished since by his Resurrection Christ conquered death.

In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the most common times for Requiem services are on the 7th and 40th day following the death, on the occasion of 1st anniversary. On these days the loved ones and friends of the deceased gather together for requiem (Fitehate Tselot) prayer with the conviction that death is not merely the end but rather a passing into reality, where the immortal of man enters into another position, a place where there is no sickness and pain.
